Turn the garment, match the old stitch line, and sew the opening shut so the repair does not become a new lump.

Tools and materials
- Needle
- Thread that matches the fabric weight
- Pins or clips
- Small sharp scissors
Steps
1. Find the real edge
Turn the piece inside out. The split usually stops where the old thread still holds. Knot off any loose tail.
2. Pin the seam
Match the original seam allowance. Do not pull the fabric into a pucker just to hide the hole.
3. Backstitch the ends
Sew across the split and a centimeter into sound stitches on both ends. Press the seam as it was.
Safety
Needles belong in a holder, not in a chair. If the fabric is rotten rather than split, a seam stitch will tear out beside the repair. That needs a patch, which is a different post.
Common mistakes
- Sewing the seam allowance into a ridge
- Using thread heavier than the cloth
A ladder stitch from the outside hides a split you cannot reach from the inside.
Proofs
Field pants, inside out. I stopped where the cloth was rotten and did not pretend a seam would hold that.
Split on a work shirt. Matched the old line and backstitched into the sound thread. It lies flat.
