The daily chicken check
Ada Brooks · 20 minutes · beginner · free · 1 proofs · 0 saves · 0 reactions
Water, feed, eggs, and the bird who is not acting like the others. A flock stays healthier when the check is boring.

Tools and materials
- A notebook or your phone
- Fresh water
- A scoop you only use for feed
Steps
1. Water first
Dump, scrub if it is slimy, and refill. Chickens will drink a bad bucket and you will blame the feed.
2. Count birds and eggs
Everyone up, everyone moving, crop not hard and empty by evening. Collect eggs so you are not incubating a surprise.
3. Walk the house
Look for damp litter, a broken latch, and one bird off by herself. Write down anything that changed.
Safety
Wash your hands after the birds. A quiet bird can be the sick one. This check does not replace a vet, and it will not tell you which medication to buy.
Common mistakes
- Topping up dirty water
- Ignoring the bird who stopped coming to the scratch
In a heat wave, check water at noon too. The list does not get shorter.
Proofs
Water dumped, not topped up. Counted six birds. One was slow to the scratch, so she is in the notebook.
