Basic Costa Rican Spanish phrases

A short set of phrases people actually use in Costa Rica, including pura vida and the usted default, with a way to hear yourself say them.
spanish · costa-rica · phrases · usted
Tools and materials
- Your voice
- A notebook
- Someone who will let you try, or a recording of your own
Steps
1. Default to usted
In many Costa Rican conversations, usted is the respectful everyday choice, not a formal costume. Start there: ¿Cómo está? not a slang guess.
2. Learn six lines
Pura vida. Con permiso. ¿Me regala...? Muchas gracias. ¿Para llevar? No entiendo, más despacio por favor. Write the one you will need this week.
3. Say them out loud
Record yourself. Compare the stress, not a perfect accent. Use one phrase the same day you learn it.
Safety
A phrasebook is not fluency, and parroting slang you do not understand can land wrong. If someone switches to English, let them. Do not practice medical or legal questions from this list.
Common mistakes
- Collecting twenty phrases and using none
- Treating every country's Spanish as the same soundtrack
Swap in the phrase your actual week needs: the bus, the feria, the hardware store.
Proofs
Used ¿Me regala...? at the feria the same day. Recorded myself and fixed the stress on permiso.
